Towers are required by law to comply with towing and transport tie-down processes. In his photo-seminar, “Towing and Transport Tie-Down Compliance,” American Towman Operations Editor Randall Resch discusses methods and techniques commonly used by today’s tow truck operators that creatively comply with or constantly violate the law. This Towing & Recovery Conference seminar will take place at Tow Expo-Dallas, August 16-18, at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Conventions Center in Dallas, Texas.

Men of Honor

0-Untitled copy 5ababBy George L. Nitti

Since high school, tow owner Steve Rhinehart of Steve's Auto Service in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, has had a passion for the history of World War II and a special place in his heart for all veterans.

He has kept his passion alive by honoring veterans of that war, particularly distinguished fighter pilots, on the company's red 2000 Kenworth T800/Vulcan V-70 unit that he calls, "Men of Honor."

"I wanted to honor the veterans for what they have done for this country," Rhinehart said. "There are nine vinyl pictures on the unit which have been enlarged as a tribute."

One of the images is of Rhinehart's father-in-law, Command Sgt. Maj. Donald Olson, who was also from Reedsburg, and two other local fighter pilots, Riney Harm and Richard Bong.

Rhinehart, who is a pilot himself, said, "Bong was a fighter pilot from Douglas County, who received a medal of honor. He flew a P-38 and shot down 40 planes during combat."

Among the other images showcased include the Black Sheep Squadron, fighter pilots who fought in the South Pacific, and a famous bomber called "Boomerang."

Rhinehart said, "It was called 'Boomerang' because the bomber fought in 132 missions and kept returning."

Rhinehart maintains that there is plenty of room to add more pictures.

He said, "We are not done yet. I would like to include veterans from other wars."

"Men of Honor," which is written in large lettering atop the pictures on both sides of the Vulcan, is a wonderful memorial of those noble gentlemen.
