The Eagle Has Landed ... Another One

Brothers Dale Sheridan Norberg Jr. and Shawn Michael Norberg manage and operate Norberg's Towing Service in Green River, Wyoming, the family business their parents established in 1967.

Shawn's little daughter Billie is his constant companion and even has her own Tonka three-wheeled wrecker. She loves being around the trucks and riding with her dad in the trucks around Norberg's yard. "Little Billie is the future," Shawn said proudly. "She will be the best tow truck driver out there!"

On Feb. 19, 2019, Norberg's received a call from a semi's driver who had gone off the road and was looking for help.

"This happened because the driver was following his GPS," Sheridan said. "He was heading to a mine 20 miles west of Green River and it sent him onto White Mountain Road north of Green River, which is a dirt road and impassable this time of year."

"The Eagle was flying" for this job, Shawn said.

The Eagle is a 1998 Freightliner FL112 with a Don Hines bed and a Zacklift. It has a factory double frame and is powered by a Caterpillar C12 engine mated to an 8LL transmission and has 46,000-lbs. rear ends with full lockers on walking beam suspension and an 18,000-lbs. steer axle.

"This truck was stuck in exactly the same spot we had been pulling vehicles out of for the past few weeks," Shawn said. "It's a rough road, covered with snow and has a sign that reads 'Road Closed, NOT Maintained,' but that hasn't kept folks from driving in anyway. I had to back in about 1.5 miles to get to him. Thankfully, the trailer was empty."

Shawn positioned Eagle and let out some line. He attached a chain to the line and rigged his attachment to the lift axle being that the rest of the back was aluminum.

"Normally we hook to the rear of the trailer and pull them backways to a turn around point," Sheridan said, "but not on an aluminum trailer."

Shawn was at the controls of Eagle and winched the tractor-trailer combo backwards out of the ditch and back onto the roadway.

"Once I had the truck back on the road, the driver had to back out all that distance and the road was not straight," he said. "As long as these folks keep following their GPS instead of paying attention to road conditions and signs, we will keep busy!"
