'The Animal' Works a Rollover

0 c0badby Jim "Buck" Sorrenti

Brothers Dale Sheridan Norberg Jr. and Shawn Michael Norberg manage and operate Norberg's Towing Service in Green River, Wyoming.

While we've experienced everything from blizzard conditions, deep freeze, a brief spring and back to the deep freeze here in the northeast, in Wyoming it's winter and business as usual for Norberg's Towing.

Their self-built carrier, affectionately called "The Animal," is a 1997 International 4900 with a DT466 and a nine-speed trans. At 33,000-lbs. GVW, it has a 28' deck with two winches and an SP8000 Side-Puller.

On Jan. 12, 2018, the Sweetwater County Police called them for a rollover that was 150' down a hill.

Shawn said, "I accepted; you know me, I've got to have a challenge."

Shawn was informed that high school kids in a 2006 Pontiac G6 were racing down a county road about nine miles north of Green River. The driver missed a corner, hit a ditch with the front end and flipped it down the hill, coming to rest on the passenger side.

Shawn set The Animal up on the road above where the car came to rest and rigged it for the winchout.

"I used the main winch off the deck," he said, "single line to the car with a V-chain to A frames and set it on its wheels there."

Shawn then began to winch it using just the one deck winch with the line through a snatch block chained to the deck to direct the pull. He winched the casualty to the road and loaded it onto the deck for transport.

Shawn said, "I've been doing more off road calls with The Animal. This one was an evening hooking in the Wyoming hills."
