Tanker Goes Belly Up in Ohio

0 95e9eBy Jim "Buck" Sorrenti

In 1992, Jae Jones started Jae's Towing & Recovery in a small two-bay garage with no tow trucks and two gas pumps. His son Nick is the operations manager and rotator operator for the family business based in Heath, Ohio.

On Aug. 25, Jae's was called to handle a nasty tanker rollover.

Jae's dispatched Nick in his 2016 Kenworth T880/Century 1150 50-ton rotator, Darren White in his 2016 Kenworth T880/Century 1135 35-ton rotator, and Jae in his 2017 Kenworth T880/Century 5230 30-ton heavy.

When they arrived, they found the tanker was fully loaded with vegetable oil grossing as much as 79,000 lbs. It was headed to a hog farm and barrel rolled, ending up vertical and belly up.

"We were challenged in both space and how the casualty was positioned within the ditch," Nick said. "We used the 1150 to position the cab for the recovery, and then proceeded to grab the trailer and maneuver it to get our recovery straps under the trailer so we could roll it from its top to its wheels back into the roadway."

They used straps to cradle and push the tanker back over, and used their Century 5230 to pull the tractor back over following the trailer.

"We ended up using the field across from the casualty, with permission from the farmer who was more than pleased with our recovery from his ditch line, to position the 1150 as there was limited space on the back country one-lane road," said Nick.

The casualty was transported one mile north to its destination to off-load the vegetable oil and then transported back to Jae's lot for storage.
